It is important to keep in mind that Eminem does not just have one type of style. It’s good to categorize his songs into Marshall Mathers, Eminem, and Slim Shady.
Slim Shady
Slim Shady songs are usually going to be the funny, controversial songs. Most ‘Slim Shady’ songs are from his first few albums and the D12 albums, as the alter-ego has somewhat died down as he’s matured as a person and an artist. Some of the best Slim Shady songs are:
– My Name Is
– The Real Slim Shady
– Without Me
– Purple Pills (D12)
All of these songs are funny, controversial, multi-syllable raps, and have a lot of wordplay. These songs are not to be taken seriously. They’re playful and poke fun at a lot of issues while delivering beats that you wouldn’t usually hear in rap (i.e. heavy use of saxophones usually).
Marshall Mathers
Marshall Mathers songs are, unlike Slim Shady songs, meant to be taken seriously. These songs go back into Marshall’s (Eminem’s) hard life. They chronicle the times when he was at his lowest and are inspired by his own past and sometimes current life (except ‘Stan’ which is metaphorical of the fact that you don’t know what you have until it’s gone, along with it’s sequel ‘Bad Guy’). These songs have deeper meanings and metaphors rather than controversial lines. Some good examples are:
– Going Through Changes
– Rock Bottom
– Stan
– Beautiful
– Sing for the Moment
– Mockingbird
– Say Goodbye to Hollywood
These songs are always sad and are used as a vent for Marshall. As he hints at in songs like ‘The Monster’ and ‘Guts Over Fear’ he uses these songs to help people who are struggling by giving them something to relate to and vibe with when they’re feeling low, and let them know that they aren’t alone. These songs usually have a slower and softer beat, usually an acoustic guitar with slow percussion. Personally these are my favorite types of Eminem’s music.
Eminem
Eminem songs are very similar to Slim Shady songs, however there is one major difference that sets them apart. Both categories can be controversial and poke fun at issues occasionally, but Eminem songs are meant to uplift rather than be funny. Eminem songs are the type of songs that make you want to get up and kick someone’s ass. These songs often have inspiring lines with a hardcore beats, quick and loud. Some of the best are:
– Lose Yourself
– Asshole
– Won’t Back Down
– Not Afraid
– Almost Famous
– Cinderella Man
– Phenomenal (From the Southpaw movie soundtrack)
These songs can be found more in Eminem’s mid to late works. These songs aren’t usually the ones you’d hear on the radio, and are sometimes under appreciated. However I can’t force feed my opinion to you, you’ll just have to listen to these yourself and decide. My three most recommended albums are The Marshall Mathers LP, Recovery, and Hell: The Sequel (this is an album by Bad Meets Evil, a rap duo Eminem was in with Royce Da 5’9”)
