The origins of marine reptiles encompass a diverse range of fascinating creatures. Among the most iconic were the plesiosaurs and pliosaurs that thrived during the Mesozoic era. Plesiosaurs, in particular, possessed a distinctive body shape characterized by a broad, flat, barrel-like body, flippers, and a long neck. This unique anatomy likely aided them in hunting, as their unsuspecting prey would only realize their true size when it was too late. Unfortunately, these magnificent animals, along with non-avian dinosaurs, became extinct 66 million years ago when a comet struck the Earth. However, their legacy lives on as recent discoveries have revealed their ancestral connection to turtles and tortoises, placing them within the Pantestudines group. Remarkably, similarities can be observed between plesiosaurs and turtles, both possessing broad and flat bodies, with the main distinction being the elongated necks of plesiosaurs. While aquatic turtles still exist today, their egg-laying reproduction prevents them from reaching the colossal sizes of plesiosaurs and pliosaurs, who gave birth to live offspring in the oceans. The land would have been unsuitable for these colossal creatures, as their massive bodies would have collapsed under their own weight.
Modern aquatic reptiles include Galapagos marine iguanas, water monitor lizards, sea snakes, and their extinct relative, the mosasaur. Mosasaurs emerged about 20 million years before the catastrophic comet impact that led to their demise. With their impressive size, massive teeth, and menacing appearance, they evoke the nightmares of the Mesozoic era. Mosasaurs were highly adapted to an aquatic lifestyle, resembling streamlined marine lizards.
In contrast, ichthyosaurs, depicted above, became extinct 26 million years prior to the comet impact. Although occasionally depicted alongside animals from the late Cretaceous, they were no longer present during that time. The reasons behind their extinction remain unknown, but it is speculated that their relatively small brains for their size may have played a role. It is a shame because with larger brains, they could have resembled dolphins, not only in terms of their streamlined bodies and pointed snouts but also in size, rivaling the largest whales. The origin of ichthyosaurs is a subject of debate among ancient aquatic reptiles. Their early partly terrestrial ancestors remain elusive, likely arising during the divergence between the lineage leading to the evolution of dinosaurs and crocodiles and the lineage that eventually gave rise to modern lizards and snakes.
This brings us to the crocodiles and their relatives. These creatures trace their origins back to intimidating, bipedal terrestrial crocodile-like animals that may have been warm-blooded and incredibly swift. In the past, there were numerous larger, more fish-like representatives of this group in the oceans compared to their present-day counterparts. Saltwater and Nile crocodiles, for instance, can grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) in length.
One of the recent sensations in the field of paleontology is the spinosaurus, known for its aquatic lifestyle. Comparable in size to Tyrannosaurus rex, these dinosaurs predominantly fed on aquatic creatures and exhibited aquatic adaptations themselves. A significant discovery unveiled their possession of tails resembling those of aquatic salamanders or tadpoles, enabling propulsion in the water. Spinosaurus belonged to the theropod lineage of dinosaurs, diverging earlier from the lineage that led to the evolution of allosaurs, tyrannosaurs, and birds.
Apart from the aforementioned reptiles, penguins and other small ancient avian dinosaurs that inhabited marine environments also fall under the classification of marine reptiles. These lesser-known and less flamboyant aquatic reptiles of ancient Earth provide captivating stories of their own.
