I have had the experience of rescuing several squirrels and keeping a few as pets, but ultimately they returned to their natural habitat. When squirrels live outdoors, it is difficult to form strong attachments to them because they face numerous predators, including hawks, owls, and the greatest threat of all: humans. Cars, children, and individuals using BB guns pose risks to their safety. Squirrels possess an innate curiosity, turning almost anything into a potential toy. My personal favorite was seeing them engage with stuffed animals, playfully wrestling around. They exhibit impressive agility, resembling nimble tree ninjas effortlessly navigating through the branches. Their movements are so fluid and graceful, akin to a captivating dance.

Squirrels are dedicated parents, and if the young are female, they may never leave their mothers’ side. They form strong bonds with their offspring, and it is only when the male squirrel reaches sexual maturity that the mother will encourage him to leave in search of a mate. Interestingly, I observed that siblings, whether brothers or sisters, do not mate with each other. This surprised me, as I have raised other rodent species in the past where such distinctions did not matter.

In conclusion, these remarkable creatures, these tree ninjas, hold a special place in my heart. They bring joy to the world and play a vital role as little tree planters, shaping our environment in their own unique way. The world would truly be incomplete without these small yet extraordinary beings.
