The word “vixen” is an interesting linguistic anomaly. It originated from a male-specific term in one English dialect and eventually came to represent a fox of either gender. On the other hand, the term for a female fox comes from a different dialect. This is why we have the words “fox” and “vixen” instead of alternative combinations such as “fox” and “fixen” or “vox” and “vixen.”
