Mono is short for monophonic, of course.
Some of the answers to your question explain the metrics of mono very well. I’ll simply add that when you examine a record that was recorded prior to the introduction of stereo, the record label (and probably the sleeve) has the words “long playing” (i.e., LP) or “high fidelity” on it.
Obviously, stereo sound can be high in fidelity, but the collocation of the words high and fidelity signify high fidelity monophonic sound.
