The Japanese Green Pheasant, scientifically known as Phasianus versicolor, holds the unofficial status of being the national bird of Japan. In the Japanese language, it is referred to as “Kiji” 雉.

Legend has it that pheasants serve as messengers for Amaterasu, the revered sun goddess in the Shinto pantheon. As the ruler of the heavens, Amaterasu’s connection with the pheasant bestowed upon it a symbol of power, abundance, and promise. Additionally, pheasants are believed to possess the ability to sense earthquakes a few minutes before their occurrence, emitting loud sounds as a warning. Thus, they are seen as protective creatures, relaying messages about impending events. A proverb even exists: “Yakeno no kigisu, yoru no tsuru” (焼野の雉子、夜の鶴), which implies the willingness of parents to risk everything for the sake of their children.

Despite its significance, the Japanese Green Pheasant is not officially recognized as the national bird. For some, the Red-crowned crane holds greater importance. This majestic bird represents luck, longevity, and fidelity, with a fabled lifespan of 1,000 years. Cranes are believed to bestow blessings in return for acts of sacrifice.

Overall, while the Japanese Green Pheasant holds an unofficial status as the national bird, the Red-crowned crane carries its own significance as a symbol of fortune and enduring commitment.
