The terms “doctoral candidate,” “doctorate,” and “Ph.D.” are related to advanced academic degrees, specifically at the doctoral level. Here’s an explanation of the differences:

Doctoral Candidate: A doctoral candidate refers to an individual who has completed the required coursework and examinations for a doctoral degree but has not yet completed their final dissertation or thesis. At this stage, the candidate is typically engaged in research and working towards completing their dissertation under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Once the dissertation is successfully defended and approved, the candidate will obtain their doctoral degree.

Doctorate: A doctorate is an advanced academic degree that is awarded upon the successful completion of a doctoral program. It is the highest level of academic degree one can earn. A doctorate demonstrates the individual’s expertise and original research contributions in a specific field. Doctoral degrees can be awarded in various disciplines, such as humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, business, and more. Examples of doctorate degrees include Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.), and many others.

Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy): Ph.D. is a specific type of doctoral degree, and it stands for Doctor of Philosophy. While the term “philosophy” in Ph.D. traditionally refers to the field of philosophy, a Ph.D. is awarded in a wide range of academic disciplines. It is an internationally recognized research degree that signifies the individual’s expertise in a particular subject area and their ability to conduct original research. Ph.D. programs typically require coursework, comprehensive exams, and the completion of a doctoral dissertation based on original research.

In summary, a doctoral candidate is a student who has completed the coursework and exams but is still working on their dissertation. A doctorate is the general term for an advanced academic degree earned at the doctoral level, and a Ph.D. specifically refers to a Doctor of Philosophy degree, which is a research-focused doctoral degree awarded in various disciplines
