Crocodiles are highly skilled swimmers and have the ability to cover substantial distances in the water. They have been observed traveling long distances by sea, sometimes reaching up to 600 miles. Impressive examples include a crocodile that traveled 366.6 miles in 25 days and another that covered 255 miles in 20 days.

Research indicates that crocodiles initiate their long-distance journeys within an hour of the tide changing. This strategic timing allows them to take advantage of the tidal flow, facilitating their movement. They halt their travels by hauling out onto the river bank when the tide begins to work against them.

These reptiles frequently engage in extensive migrations, often traveling more than 31 miles away from their home range, venturing towards river mouths, and even venturing into open sea. Their ability to undertake these journeys showcases their remarkable swimming capabilities and adaptability to different aquatic environments.
