The New Education Policy (NEP) of India was approved by the Union Cabinet on July 29, 2020. It is a comprehensive framework for elementary education to higher as well as vocational training in both rural and urban India. The policy aims to transform India’s education system by 2030.

Here are some of the major reforms introduced by the NEP:

• The 10+2 structure is replaced by a 5+3+3+4 model. This means that school education will be divided into four stages: Foundational (ages 3-8), Preparatory (ages 8-11), Middle (ages 11-14), and Secondary (ages 14-18).
• There will be no discernible divide between the arts, sciences, academic, vocational, curricular, and extracurricular disciplines. Students will be encouraged to explore a variety of subjects and to develop their interests and skills.
• Foundational Reading and Numeracy will be prioritised. All students will be expected to achieve foundational literacy and numeracy by Grade 3.
• Students are permitted to take the Board Examinations twice. This will give students the opportunity to improve their performance and to get a better score.
• Instead of 1.7%, the government will spend 6% of the country’s GDP on education. This will help to improve the quality of education in India.
• The fund for gender inclusion will be completely established. This will help to ensure that all girls have access to quality education.
