In chicken terminology:
Female chickens that are under one year old are called pullets. Once they reach or surpass one year of age, they are referred to as hens.
Male chickens that are under one year old are known as cockerels. When they reach or exceed one year of age, they are called cocks or roosters.
The term “chick” is a general term that encompasses both male and female baby chickens.
This naming convention is similar to how “foal” is a general term used for both female (fillies) and male (colts) young horses.
