There are certain movies that appear very intelligent and entertaining when you view it but when you are totally bored and try to analyse it , you will realise it has a lot of potholes.

3 idiots is such a movie which not only blew away Indians but also the Chinese people by covering the things noone wanted to discuss. For the time, it held a mirror on the society and showed how ugly it was.

But it had it own share of problems, for this ,I’ll include the source of the movie , Five point someone, written by Chetan Bhagat which had its own potholes .

Reckless Ryan vs Rambo Rancho

In the book, Ryan is shown as the cool guy fighting against the cruel IIT system , but half way across,the author feels that he was enamored by a man child who was lashing out at his insecurities.

But Rancho was shown as a college equivalent of MacGyver. He could do anything like a first year mechanical student can finish a final year electronics project . Everything he touches turns into gold. He can even deliver a baby using vaccum pump and resuscitate it with “all is well “. Thankfully, they didn’t show him reading Ria’s medical books for timepass or else he might have created a wonder drug to cure cancer .

Rancho misleading his friends .

I’ve seen guys like Rancho in my life , who hardly study but get good marks , however, I’ve also seen guys who literally study every waking hours but only get only 60% ish .

Rancho was the former but he assumes that everyone has his grasping power and dissuaded his friends from studying . Atleast in the book, Ryan is always the last . But here , he doesn’t mind his friends are last but he is topping the class.

Imagine if Raju hadn’t cleared that interview which can never happen in real life scenario and Andre istevaan either wasn’t impressed or didn’t see Farhan’s photos , they would have been low grade passouts from a top University with a bleak future.

Cartoonish demonization of Virus

Boman Irani portrayal of the Dean was over the top. This guy was so workaholic that he does his unnecessary tasks like shaving when he is on nap . But for what reason, he is never shown to do research . He never appreciated the potential of the Joy Lobo’s drone project or Rancho’s inverter.

He even tries to set a tough paper just to fail Raju because he lost a bet . He was made a villain just to elevate the Saint Rancho .

Villain 2 : Chatur

Yes , he comes across as despicable type who slips porn magazines to distract his competition. But making a mockery of him in front of entire college just to prove a point to Raju was too much . It’s no wonder he wanted to prove to Rancho and nearly succeeded.

Villain 3 : Subodh

Rancho tells Ria that his fiance is bad because he is working in a bank after finishing MBA after his engineering. What’s wrong in that ? Banks need MBAs and a lot of top CEO have an engineering and MBA background.

He tells Farhan to pursue his dream . What if Subodh’s dream was to study MBA but his dad was like Farhan’s dad .

Also his social experiment to pretend that watch is missing . Of course it’s first nature for anyone to search for the lost watch and noone will be happy to see a woman stand coolly and tell that her watch is missing.

Why he went to marry that same girl after 10 years is still a mystery .

Rancho’s friends not reaching out to him .

You mean the guy who guided you during the dark phase of college and made you self confident didn’t give an address or phone and never contacts you but you don’t bother to find out why .

Afterall, he is the wealthy chamardas chachad son and since they were in the good books of Virus at the end of college. They could have easily got his information from the college records or a detective snooping around.

Ranchos frequent brushes with getting disbarred.

Phunsuk wangdo was given a golden ticket to study engineering but under the name of his employer’s son with the deal to give the degree after finishing . Any person in such a situation would keep his head low and try to finish it .

But Rancho keeps fighting with the management even after knowing how irrational the Dean is and even for disbarred just to be saved by his vacuum pump delivery of a baby .

Suicide

This is my biggest pet peeve . This movie has 3 suicides in which one was successful, one attempted and one off-screen.

Joy Lobo commits suicide after virus refuses to extend his project and fails him . Rancho calls it a murder and then what happens. He writes 2 new words on screen and then laughter and they just move on .

Raju attempts suicide in a gruesome manner after being forced to give up Ranchos name , right from the window of Dean’s office . But then , a sad song, a joke involving his sister showing Rancho can ever cure coma patients with his charisma. And then they move on again .

How come noone questions his Dean and how he operates with no accountability. What is press and trust doing here ? Inspite all this , virus is shown making a tough question paper to fail Raju .

The third is the one where Ria shows the letter of his dead brother and how Virus pressure to clear the entrance exam caused his suicide . In the book , the professor’s attitude completely changes and he forgives the trio and awards credits for their research and promises to reduce the workload and allow research .

But in the movie , he is still shown angry with Rancho and only a vacuum pump delivery of his grandchild changes his mind .

This movies brings up the point of student suicides and then trivializes it .

I’m not trying to be cinema connoisseur trying to pick holes or telling it’s worst. I love his movie and would this anytime and it deserves the praises it gets .

But these are the points I feel was brushed over or dumbed down in the name of entertainment.
