A Lament of Bones.
I have a curse with my song writing- as soon as I finish a song, I start to dislike it. About a week after I’ve finished it? I loathe it.
A month after I finish it? I hate it, it’s disgusting, it’s dead to me, I can’t believe I even tried to write a song, I suck.
A Lament of Bones is different.
It’s not finished.
And I don’t think I want it to be.
Also, the story behind writing it is bizarre and has never happened before or since.
Normally, I consciously write songs.
Crossing out lines, changing phrasing, messing with the tune, etc.
It’s a whole process.
This song woke me up in the middle of the night.
I stumbled into the living room at 2:00am, reached for a pen and paper, and frantically scribbled out the words while humming the tune.
Whatever dream I’d been having was receding- and with it, my song.
Throughout the course of 1 or 2 minutes I guided words onto my scrap of paper, rearranged them, and sang my heart out.
When I realized that I didn’t have any more to write, I looked over the song.
And I loved it.
To this day, I’ve never had another song hit me like that one did.
It smacked right into my soul and woke me out of a dead sleep, demanding to exist and to be scrawled across pages.
I still love it and sing it all the time.
