A few years ago, I had just been rejected by a girl, and was feeling pretty fucking terrible. It’s very hard to not feel like you’ve somehow failed and are without value when something like that happens. Around that time, I heard Lizzo’s song “Boys”

Musically, I wasn’t really impressed. I’ve never been much of a pop fan. However the lyrics really got to me. This song is a love-letter to young men. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think there is that much media dedicated to telling men that they have inherent value. Men aren’t to be desired and appreciated. They have to accomplish things. They have to be willing to sacrifice themselves. They have to be better than other men.

Perhaps it was just my post-rejection brain lapping up any approval I could get. But Lizzo’s music made me genuinely feel a lot better. It felt so good to have a song wholeheartedly tell me “Hey, men are pretty good! You’re alright!”

Regardless of what other controversy Lizzo’s gotten herself in, that alone has a lot of value to me.
