Begin by gathering your puppy and some high-value treats, then head to a field or pond where other dogs are engaged in retrieving activities with ballistic dummies. Park your vehicle at a considerable distance from the area and proceed slowly and systematically, giving your pup ample time to observe and familiarize themselves with the sights, sounds, and smells of the surroundings.

Command your puppy to sit and spend some time in this position, allowing them to absorb the scene while observing the reactions of the dogs and noting your own calm demeanor. After each gunshot, reward your puppy with a treat.

Ensure that your dog remains leashed throughout the entire process. Let your puppy watch a few rounds of retrieves, gradually getting accustomed to the noise and activity. Then, approach one of the participants while repeating the “sit and watch” routine and offering treats regularly.

If your dog shows a natural inclination and you have been working on recall training with confidence, you can certainly allow them to participate in a retrieve. However, regardless of the outcome, make sure to end the visit to the drill field on a positive note. If your puppy successfully retrieves an item, do not leave immediately afterward. Instead, leash up, sit, wait, and watch a few more retrieves by the other dogs, offering treats along the way. Finally, walk back to your vehicle for the journey home, continuing to provide treats during the trip.

Make the act of leaving for home a joyful event. Consider stopping for a Puppachino and a coffee on the way back, allowing your pup to associate field trips with enjoyable experiences.

When you embark on serious “gun training,” it is advisable to provide ear protection for both your dog and yourself. For dogs deployed from blinds or stands, such as Labs, Chessies, and other water dogs, you can train them to “hold” or “wait” until you remove the earmuffs, using that as a signal for them to “go get it.”

Dogs that work ahead of hunters, such as Pointers, Setters, and Spaniels, are less susceptible to hearing damage compared to a dog sitting at your feet and may not require hearing protection.

Wishing you good luck with your puppy and successful hunting adventures!
