A defining characteristic of all mammals is the presence of a unique feature: a hole in the head!
These holes consist of the nostrils, eyes, and a distinct “temporal fenestra.”
This trait originated in a group of reptilian animals that emerged over 300 million years ago. Alongside the temporal fenestra, they started evolving mammal-like features. Their limbs transitioned from a sprawling position to a more upright posture, and their teeth began to specialize for various purposes.
Reptiles lack the diverse array of functions that mammals possess in their jaws.
Although these reptilian animals were the largest creatures before the Permian extinction, nearly all of them, especially the larger species, did not survive this catastrophic event. Consequently, the field was left open for the rapid expansion of reptilian clades.
The surviving synapsids, small shrew-like animals, filled the ecological niches that were left behind. They clung to survival with their varied teeth, developed fur, and started producing nutritious milk for their young.
Several reptilian traits persisted, including egg-laying. Two survivors from this group, known as monotremes, still exist today.
The subsequent branch of mammals gave birth to their young at an extremely immature stage and carried them in a specialized fold that eventually developed into a pouch equipped with a nipple.
These marsupials spread widely but eventually faced competition from the last group of mammals, the placentals, which emerged approximately 160 million years ago. Marsupials found their habitats restricted to a large island that separated from what is now Antarctica, where placental mammals did not exist.
As for us, we are placental mammals characterized by the presence of a placenta, which facilitates the exchange of nutrients and waste with the developing fetus. However, we still retain the distinctive “hole in the head.”
