A brief search reveals that there are several animals that fit this description.

One example is the baleen whale, which includes the blue whale, the largest animal ever known. Despite their immense size and power, baleen whales lack teeth and the ability to consume large prey. When their only predators, orcas, attack, baleen whales cannot effectively fight back. Humans historically took advantage of their docile nature during whaling activities. The gray whale is the only baleen whale known to occasionally defend itself against orcas, although not always successfully.

Another example is the manatee, sometimes referred to as “sea cows.” These gentle herbivores are slow eaters and lack aggressive, charging behavior seen in other species. Manatees are generally non-confrontational and rather lazy, despite their large size. They have very few natural predators due to their specific habitat, but they face threats from humans, particularly boat propellers that can harm them and human-induced environmental changes that affect their food source, sea grass.

One more “gentle giant of the sea” is the whale shark, the largest fish in the ocean (excluding whales, which are mammals). Adult whale sharks can reach lengths of up to 32 feet and weigh about 9 tons, with some individuals exceeding 40 feet in length. Despite being a shark, they feed primarily on small, even microscopic, organisms. Whale sharks exhibit no interest in harming other creatures, and divers can safely swim alongside them without fear. However, accidental collisions with small boats can cause significant damage or destruction. Orcas are known to rarely threaten whale sharks.
