Unlike domestic cat breeds, tigers do not have recognized “breeds.” All tigers belong to the same species, Panthera tigris. However, there are different subspecies of tigers within this species, each possessing distinct characteristics and geographical distributions.

One of the most critically endangered and rare subspecies is the South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis). This tiger was historically found in the southeastern region of China but is now considered functionally extinct in the wild. There are no known individuals remaining in their natural habitat, and any surviving South China tigers exist only in captive breeding programs. The South China tiger has faced significant challenges such as habitat loss, poaching, and other factors that have contributed to its decline.
