Most dairy cattle are naturally born with horn buds, which will develop into horns. However, dairy farmers choose to disbud them at a young age for safety reasons. Disbudding helps prevent injuries to other animals and people working with the cattle.
Typically, calves undergo disbudding within the first month of their lives. Many farmers use pain mitigation measures, such as analgesics or anesthetics, to ensure the process is as comfortable as possible for the calves.
Although all major dairy breeds predominantly carry the horned gene, there are some cattle that possess the polled gene, which means they naturally do not grow horns. Increasingly, farmers are utilizing “polled” sires to breed calves that inherit the polled trait and do not develop horns.

The cow experiences a shorter dry period.
