Gases are affected by gravity, but the effect is not as strong as it is for liquids or solids. This is because gases are very spread out, so the gravitational force on each individual molecule is very weak. The molecules are also constantly moving, so they can easily escape the pull of gravity.
The atmosphere is held close to the Earth’s surface by gravity, but it is also constantly being pulled away by the Sun’s gravity. The Earth’s rotation and the Earth’s magnetic field also help to keep the atmosphere in place.
If the Earth did not have an atmosphere, the gases would quickly escape into space. This is why other planets with no atmospheres are very cold and dry.
