    People say that atoms are microscopic because they are too small to be seen with the naked eye or even with a light microscope. The smallest thing that can be seen with a light microscope is about 1 micrometer, or 1 millionth of a meter. Atoms are much smaller than that, with the average atom being about 0.1 nanometers, or 1 billionth of a meter.

    Even though we can’t see atoms directly, we can still study them by using other methods, such as scattering of light or electrons. These methods have shown us that atoms are incredibly small and that they are made up of even smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons.

    So, even though we can’t see them, we know that atoms are real and that they are the building blocks of everything in the universe.

    Here are some of the ways that scientists study atoms without being able to see them:

    • Scattering of light: When light hits an atom, it can be scattered in different directions. By studying the way that light is scattered, scientists can learn about the size and shape of atoms.
    • Electron microscopy: Electrons can be used to create images of atoms that are much smaller than what can be seen with a light microscope.
    • Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy: This technique can be used to study the structure of atoms by measuring the way that they interact with magnetic fields.
