Air does fall to the ground, but it also has a lot of kinetic energy, which is the energy of motion. This kinetic energy keeps the air from falling all the way to the ground. The air molecules are constantly moving around and bumping into each other, which creates pressure. This pressure pushes back against gravity and prevents the air from falling all the way to the ground.
The higher up you go, the less air there is, which means there is less pressure. This is why the air is thinner at high altitudes. The air molecules are still moving around, but there is less of them to bump into each other, so the pressure is lower.
The Earth’s atmosphere is held in place by a balance between gravity and pressure. Gravity pulls the air towards the Earth, but pressure pushes back against gravity. This balance keeps the air from falling to the ground and allows us to breathe.
