Many people are unaware that numerous bird species, including smaller ones, have impressive cognitive abilities. For example, they can memorize the locations of numerous cached food items, a task that is challenging for humans. Bird behavior is often complex, involving elaborate courtship rituals, intricate songs, and intricate parenting behaviors. They also exhibit remarkable feats of aerial navigation during migration, traveling long distances. Finding food can be equally challenging for birds, if not more so, due to their high metabolic rates. Furthermore, many bird species have longer lifespans compared to mammals of similar size, allowing for extensive learning opportunities.
Although bird brains are relatively small, this is primarily due to their smaller body sizes. Birds need to minimize the weight and size of their organs, including the brain, to facilitate flight, which is energetically demanding. However, birds compensate for their small brain size by having small neurons. In fact, when counting neurons, birds have numbers comparable to primates in their forebrains.
From a scientific standpoint, it is more appropriate to ask why there are fewer intelligent mammals compared to the abundance of intelligent birds.
