Why is the majority of our DNA identical between humans and bananas (and most living things)? What does that mean for evolution? Why do creationists never reply when their arguments are debunked? Eg the claim that evolution violates the 2nd law of thermodynamics, which does not apply to a system with an input of energy, such as the Earth.

The majority of our DNA being identical to that of other organisms, such as bananas, is a result of shared ancestry and evolution. All living organisms on Earth share a common origin and have descended from a common ancestor. Over millions of years, genetic variations have accumulated, leading to the diversity of life we observe today. However, there are also significant differences in DNA sequences that contribute to the unique characteristics of each species.

The similarity in DNA between different species indicates that there is a common genetic code that is used to build and regulate life’s processes. The fact that humans share a significant amount of DNA with other organisms, including bananas, highlights the underlying unity of life and the deep connections between different branches of the tree of life.

From an evolutionary perspective, this genetic similarity is expected because organisms with common ancestry inherit genetic material from their ancestors. Over time, genetic changes, such as mutations and genetic recombination, accumulate, leading to the emergence of new species. The degree of similarity in DNA sequences can be used as evidence to trace evolutionary relationships between different species.

Regarding your second question, it is important to note that not all creationists respond the same way when their arguments are challenged or debunked. Some individuals may engage in respectful dialogue and reevaluate their viewpoints based on new information or evidence, while others may choose not to respond or remain entrenched in their beliefs.

The claim that evolution violates the second law of thermodynamics is a common misconception. The second law of thermodynamics applies to closed systems, where energy and matter cannot enter or leave. However, the Earth is not a closed system but an open system, receiving a constant input of energy from the Sun. This input of energy allows for the increase in complexity and order seen in biological systems, such as the evolution of life.

Scientific discussions often involve the exchange of ideas, evidence, and reasoning, which can sometimes lead to disagreements. It’s important to foster respectful and constructive dialogue to promote understanding and further scientific progress.
