I used to hold a bias against Chihuahuas, considering them to be bratty and antisocial. However, my perspective completely changed the day I adopted Brooklyn.
It was a day filled with disappointments as the Blue Heeler puppy I had planned to adopt fell through. Feeling distraught, I remembered a picture of a small black puppy that I had previously overlooked due to his size. I reached out to the woman who had sent me the photo and found out he was still available for adoption. Without hesitation, I drove an hour in the opposite direction to bring him home.
When I finally met Brooklyn, he was even tinier than I had imagined. Despite my initial fear of caring for such a small puppy, he quickly became my little companion by the next morning.
Brooklyn has an enormous personality and greets everyone he meets with friendliness. People often remark that if all small dogs were like him, they would be fans of Chihuahuas.
At eight months old, he weighs just under 6 pounds. The vet believes he may be a teacup Chihuahua mixed with a Boston Terrier, and assures me that he is in good health. The family I adopted him from had mentioned the Chihuahua-Boston Terrier mix.
One funny incident involving Brooklyn took place at the dog park. He discovered a muddy spot under a tree, likely caused by a burst pipe, and decided to indulge in a mud bath while my attention was elsewhere. He playfully sprawled on his back in the mud, extending his front paws as if he were at a spa. The other dog owners and I couldn’t help but laugh, and I took him home for a well-deserved bath.
I want to emphasize that not all Chihuahuas are difficult. Just like any other dog, they require love, care, and extensive socialization. Brooklyn has proven to be an incredible companion, and I couldn’t be happier to have him in my life.
On a side note, I am overwhelmed by the response and appreciation for Brooklyn and his furry sibling, Cookie. They truly deserve all the love they receive. Thank you for brightening my day with your comments and dog pictures. It’s especially heartwarming since today, September 8, is my birthday!
