Yes, if you look at his career he started with serials followed by his debut hit Deewana. Doing several films he experimented doing negative roles that Salman and Aamir refused in Baazigar and Darr respectively. This in a strong way marked his presence.
As Amitabh was tagged as angry young man after Zanjeer, these two films made him stand with an anti hero quality. DDLJ and other romantic films gave him the tag of King of romance too. If you keep the above mentioned films aside then too you will note that he was consistent in giving hits with good performances.
KARAN ARJUN, DIL TO PAGAL HAIN, MOHABATTIEN , DEVDAS. Even in films where he was not a solo hero he made his presence felt be it KKKG, KHNH , KARAN ARJUN, MOHABATTIEN. Its not that other actors were not giving competition but he stole the limelight way back with his anti hero image which confirmed that he is here to stay for a long time, and due to a movie BAADSHAH, people started calling him the BAADSHAH of Bollywood. His signature step itself depicts that he ruled the decade.
So if you keep aside the two movies mentioned above he was able to give a lot of good films and spanning a career of more than two decades with consistency. It can be said that he is not wearing the king’s crown for just those two films.
