The question of hair texture in human evolution carries intriguing implications. Based on the straight hair of modern apes and monkeys, it is plausible that our earliest ancestors also had straight hair. However, the presence of curly hair in modern Africans while non-Africans tend to have straight or wavy hair suggests that the earliest humans may have had curly hair, but those who migrated out of Africa lost this trait.

One commonly proposed explanation for the tight curly hair seen in Africans is its potential protective function against heat and sunlight (Is it better to have curly or straight hair? – Genes and Hair Curl, Why do black people have curly hair?, Afro-textured hair – Wikipedia). However, this theory seems inconsistent with the observation that African apes generally do not have tight curly hair.

If we consider that humans differ from apes due to our ancestors transitioning from forests to savannas, one might expect to find curly hair in large monkeys like baboons. However, their hair tends to be fairly straight, which challenges this assumption.

Upon examining wild animals, including those in Africa, tight curly hair appears to be absent or rare. It occasionally manifests in domesticated animals. Consequently, climate, heat, sun, and environment alone cannot explain the evolution of curly hair in humans.

Another possibility is that sexual selection played a role. It could be that our earliest ancestors found curly hair aesthetically appealing and selected mates based on this preference, resulting in a selective advantage for the trait. However, this idea raises the question of why those who left Africa later abandoned this preference, especially considering that genetic evidence suggests separate evolution of straight hair in Caucasians and Asians (Is it better to have curly or straight hair? – Genes and Hair Curl).

Alternatively, there might be an advantage to having curly hair in tropical regions when the brain is larger, but not when the brain is smaller or in temperate zones. This explanation aligns with the observation that Melanesians also have curly hair, but contradicts the lack of curly hair among Native American peoples and Indo-Chinese populations living in tropical areas.

Lastly, it is possible that the evolution of hair texture is a result of neutral or random processes, unrelated to specific advantages or disadvantages.

In summary, the origins of curly hair in human evolution remain complex and not fully understood, prompting various hypotheses that encompass factors such as environmental adaptation, sexual selection, brain size, and chance occurrences. Further research and exploration are necessary to unravel the complete story behind the evolution of hair texture in humans.
