Treating PTSD and C-PTSD without medication can be more effective in the long term, as medication only provides temporary relief and does not address the root cause of trauma. Comparing medication for trauma to a sedative for a noisy dog, it may provide short-term relief but does not solve the underlying problem.

To effectively treat trauma, it must be processed through therapy. Being aware of natural responses to triggers is crucial, and medication can interfere with this process by altering brain chemistry. While anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication may be helpful in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event, long-term treatment should focus on developing healthy responses through therapy.

The author notes that they have been on anti-depressants for over a decade but clarifies that this is not for treating their PTSD or C-PTSD. For trauma, talking therapy is essential to analyze and understand the root causes of shame, guilt, fear, and knee-jerk responses. Meditation can also be a helpful tool to create a safe mental space when in a triggering environment.

In conclusion, medication is a temporary solution that can provide relief in the short term but should not be relied upon for long-term treatment of PTSD or C-PTSD. The aim of treatment should be to heal enough to walk without the crutch of medication.
