I didn’t exactly injure myself on the instruments during the exploratory laparotomy. In reality, my resident intentionally stabbed me with a scalpel.

Despite the shock and pain, I took swift action:

• I applied pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding.

• I removed my glove to inspect the injury.

• I sanitized the wound with betadine to prevent infection.

• I covered it with a band-aid to control the bleeding.

• I put on a new pair of gloves and resumed the surgery.

• Later, I shared a photo of the wound on Facebook to expose the resident’s behavior, but unfortunately, the post backfired, and people made fun of me instead.

Regardless of the outcome, I survived the incident and lived to tell the tale.
