Carrying excess weight can have a negative impact on the knees, leading to pain and arthritis. The knee joint is responsible for supporting and distributing the body’s weight during movement, and being overweight puts additional stress and pressure on this joint. This can cause joint wear and tear, inflammation, and pain.

Moreover, being overweight triggers the release of hormones and inflammatory substances that contribute to joint damage and inflammation. Research indicates that being overweight increases the risk of developing osteoarthritis, a type of arthritis characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in the joint.

Losing weight can help relieve the stress and pressure on the knee joint, which can potentially alleviate knee pain and improve joint function in individuals with osteoarthritis. Physical therapy and exercise can also improve joint strength and flexibility, thereby reducing pain and improving function. However, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional before starting any weight loss or exercise program, particularly if you have knee pain or arthritis.
