Memories from the past
When I was a kid, I was overweight. My classmates called me “Mote” or “Hatti.” I remember coming home from school crying and blaming my mom for feeding me too much.
I was fed up with being fat. I was fed up of not being able to run. I was fed up of being exhausted too early. I was fed up of being called names. I was fed up of unsolicited advice from my building aunties. And I was fed up of being pitied by my friends.
I had to lose weight. And I had to lose it fast.
Back then I was in grade eight. My parents wouldn’t let me go to the gym. So I ran and cycled all day long.
One day, I visited my cousin. He was 10 years older than me and not overweight. He told me that he walked up and down the stairs of his 7-storey building every day, 12 times. I decided to join him.
Walking up and down those stairs was tough. But it was also exhilarating. I could feel the fat burning away. I could see myself getting thinner.
I did this every day for a month. By the end of the month, I had lost a significant amount of weight. My classmates were amazed. My parents were proud. And I was happy.
I’ve maintained my weight ever since. I believe that determination was the key to my success. Every time I walked up those stairs, I saw myself getting thinner. I felt the fat burning deep down my skin. I imagined looking back at myself from the mirror, a fitter me. Each drop of sweat made me happier. It made me lighter.
If you want to lose weight, I urge you to get determined. Imagine the newer you. The way you want to be. And let that feeling be strong, let it make you happy. Let it make you confident. Be diligent. Be patient. And don’t give up.
