How do people have cheat days and don’t gain weight if you had a maintenance of 2500 and had a 10,000 calorie cheat day once a week and ate at a 500 calorie deficit the other days of the week wouldn’t you still be in a surplus and gaining weight?

You are correct in your assessment. If someone consistently consumes 10,000 calories on a cheat day while maintaining a 500-calorie deficit on the other days of the week, they would likely be in a calorie surplus and may gain weight over time.

Weight gain or loss is primarily determined by the balance between calories consumed and calories burned. To lose weight, it’s necessary to maintain a calorie deficit, meaning that you consume fewer calories than your body needs for maintenance. Conversely, a calorie surplus leads to weight gain.

While occasional cheat days or higher-calorie days can be incorporated into a balanced and sustainable diet, consistently consuming significantly more calories on a cheat day can hinder weight loss efforts.

It’s important to keep in mind that weight management is a long-term process, and a single day of overeating does not have a significant impact on your overall progress. However, consistent calorie surplus can slow down weight loss or lead to weight gain over time.

If you want to have occasional higher-calorie days or treat meals, it’s important to account for them within your overall calorie balance. You may need to adjust your intake on other days to compensate for the extra calories consumed.

Remember, weight management is not solely determined by one day or meal but rather the overall pattern of calorie intake and energy expenditure over time. Striving for a consistent and balanced approach to nutrition and maintaining a moderate calorie deficit will generally yield more sustainable and successful weight loss outcomes.
