Mammals derive their name from the term “Mammae,” which refers to breasts. This is because mammals are characterized by their ability to nurse their young with milk from mammary glands.

There are three main types of mammals:

Monotremes: Monotremes, such as the Duck-billed Platypus, are unique mammals that lay eggs. They possess mammary glands to nurse their young despite their egg-laying reproductive method.

Marsupials: Marsupials give birth to relatively undeveloped young, which then crawl into a pouch on the mother’s abdomen. Inside the pouch, the newborns attach themselves to nipples to continue their development. Kangaroos are a well-known example of marsupials.

Placentals: Placental mammals, including humans, dogs, cats, and monkeys, have a fully developed placenta during pregnancy. The offspring develop inside the mother’s womb and are born in a more advanced state compared to monotremes and marsupials.

These three categories encompass the diverse range of mammals, each with its unique reproductive characteristics and nurturing methods.
