Elephants are known to have a surprising fear of bees. Despite being the largest animals on land, they are terrified of these tiny insects. While a bee’s stinger cannot penetrate an elephant’s thick skin, it can cause discomfort if it stings sensitive areas such as the eyes, nose, or trunk. When an elephant hears the buzzing sound of bees, it reacts by flapping its ears, stirring up dust, and making loud noises in an attempt to scare away the perceived threat. If these tactics fail, the elephant will usually leave the area.

This interesting behavior of elephants has been utilized by elephant advocates to protect crops from these majestic creatures. Farmers have been persuaded to use the fear elephants have for bees as a natural deterrent. By strategically placing beehives, including fake ones with recorded bee noises, researchers in Africa have successfully shown that elephants can be kept away from farmers’ crops.

In a similar vein, it has been suggested that the sound of buzzing bees can be mimicked using a homemade kazoo. The resemblance of the kazoo sound to buzzing bees can potentially repel elephants even without the actual presence of bees. This creative approach could provide an effective and non-harmful method for deterring elephants from certain areas.
