Western and Eastern philosophers have different views on the nature of happiness. Western philosophers tend to view happiness as a state of mind that is achieved through individual effort, such as pursuing material possessions, achieving success, or helping others. Eastern philosophers, on the other hand, tend to view happiness as a state of being that is aligned with the natural world and achieved through self-awareness, meditation, and detachment from material possessions.

Here is a more detailed look at the views of Western and Eastern philosophers on happiness:

    Western philosophers

    • Aristotle: Aristotle believed that happiness is the highest good for humans and that it can be achieved through a life of virtue. He defined virtue as the mean between two extremes, such as courage as the mean between rashness and cowardice.
    • Thomas Aquinas: Aquinas believed that happiness is the ultimate goal of human life and that it can be achieved through a life of obedience to God. He argued that happiness is a state of being that is characterized by peace, joy, and love.
    • John Stuart Mill: Mill believed that happiness is the greatest good for the greatest number of people. He argued that happiness can be achieved through a life of pleasure and freedom.

    Eastern philosophers

    • Buddha: Buddha believed that happiness is the cessation of suffering and that it can be achieved through the Eightfold Path. The Eightfold Path is a set of ethical principles and practices that lead to enlightenment.
    • Confucius: Confucius believed that happiness is the result of living a virtuous life. He defined virtue as the ability to live in harmony with others and with nature.
    • Lao Tzu: Lao Tzu believed that happiness is the result of living a simple life in accordance with the Tao, or the natural order of the universe.

It is important to note that these are just a few examples of the views of Western and Eastern philosophers on happiness. There are many other philosophers who have written about happiness, and their views vary widely. However, the views of these philosophers provide a starting point for our own understanding of happiness.
