One of my Mom’s faves…
the ‘Velvet Fog’, Mel Torme
I come from a family of music lovers, and my Mom and Aunts just loved this guy! By the time I got interested in him, his time had come and gone (he passed in 1999). But Mel Torme had an unbelievable career that spanned some 60 years! Great jazz singer, who was world renowned for his ‘scatting’ or freestyle improvisation. He could sing multiple styles and actually started songwriting and playing the drums at the age of 13.
These days when I play Mel Torme records, it sounds like music from a bygone era. My GF hates it! But the ‘Velvet Fog’ could really let it rip. Don’t let the Indiana farm boy looks fool you, vocally he could handle his own. In his prime, he was literally the best singer on the planet! His early work with Artie Shaw and Mel’s own vocal group “The Mel-Tones” were one of the first jazz vocal ensembles. These were the guys that influenced the early Pop n Rock vocal acts such as the ‘Four Freshmen’ and the ‘Hi-Lo’s’.
