The male prostate gland is a small gland shaped like a walnut, located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The urethra, which is responsible for carrying urine out of the body through the penis, runs through the prostate gland.
To check for any abnormalities in the prostate gland, a doctor may perform a digital rectal exam (DRE). This involves the insertion of a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel for any signs of swelling, hardness, or lumps. Although the exam may cause some discomfort, it only takes a few minutes and is an essential part of prostate cancer screening for men over the age of 50 or those with other risk factors. Other diagnostic tests, such as a PSA blood test or imaging tests like MRI or ultrasound, may also be recommended by the doctor if necessary.
