Donkeys are highly territorial and will confront coyotes if they enter their pasture. While a 1000 lb horse would typically flee from a group of coyotes, a 150 lb donkey will bravely stand its ground and engage in a fight. Coyotes tend to avoid pastures with donkeys because they know that donkeys will fiercely kick them. Donkeys are like the unpredictable individual you wouldn’t want to mess with because they can unexpectedly unleash their strength.

In addition to their protective nature, donkeys make excellent companions for horses. They form strong bonds and often become close friends. This companionship is especially beneficial when dealing with aggressive stallions who may harass other male horses and need to be kept away from females when not in breeding season. Horses don’t perceive donkeys as threats or competition; instead, they see them as companions. I’ve witnessed horses and donkeys who become visibly upset when separated, even though their activities together may seem relatively relaxed, mostly involving standing around. However, attempting to separate them without the other’s presence can result in a symphony of whickering, braying, whinnying, and stomping.

That’s why many horse farms choose to have donkeys. They serve a dual purpose, providing protection and bringing comfort to the horses through companionship.
