GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus. This can happen due to overeating, lying down too soon after eating, defects in the valve connecting the esophagus to the stomach, or a condition called hiatal hernia, where the upper part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm into the chest. It is more common in middle-aged and older overweight white men.
While GERD is a risk factor for esophageal cancer and a symptom of a rare type of pancreatic cancer, it is not associated with other types of cancer, such as colon, stomach, or lung cancer.
After prolonged GERD, it can develop into Barrett’s esophagus, where the cells in the lining of the esophagus change to protect itself from constant acid exposure. This can progress to cancer, but treating GERD with medication can reduce cancer risk.
GERD symptoms include heartburn and regurgitation, but up to 20% may experience other symptoms like coughing, chest pain, a sore throat, hoarse voice, or frequent sinus infections. It’s important to discuss any symptoms with a doctor.
Ayurvedic ingredients like coral calcium, agate calcium, Jahar mohra pishti, Kamdudha ras, Mukta pishti, Giloy satva, and garlic capsules are used to treat acidity and GERD by various brands like Patanjali, Planet Ayurveda, and Baidyanath.
